What I Think of the Phils Off-Season

This has been one heck of an off-season for the Phillies. Lately the Phils have done some great things when then avoided arbitration with Chooch, Victorino, and Big Joe. Amaro did make what the ESPN people called a Blockbuster trade when he traded away minor-league prospects for Roy Halladay and then traded away the stone-faced killer Cliff Lee for some minor-leaguers from Seattle. We all know the move happened. A lot of people bitched about it. And everyone played the “What-If” game with the topic of “What if the Phillies kept Lee and Halladay?”

Amaro’s actions seemed legit at the time, Lee only has one year left on his contract. He’s going to make $9 million this season, but after next season Cliff Lee is in line for a VERY big payday. We’re talking Johan Santana/CC Sabathia money. Amaro knew that with a depleted farm system, 3 star players up for arbitration this season, and the needs in the bullpen and bench (thank God Beardo is gone, but Brian Schneider, really??), that Cliff Lee’s big payday would have left them strapped. Now the Phillies do have money, but they also have a self imposed $140 million salary cap. But they are trying to stay competitive long term here, instead of loading up the rotation and not having the cash to keep any of the position players.

Now one key I want to focus on is going to be a big deal next off-season. Jayson Werth is a free agent at the end of the year. Barring something horrific this season, Werth should be looking at making Jason Bay money. The Phillies do have a few pretty good minor-league outfielders, but Werth is just too good to let go and play in Boston or New York. I’m really hopeful that the Phillies can resign Werth, after all #isharemybdaywiththatguy.

But just when I was comfortable with the fact that Lee is gone, and started backing the Phillies when friends and family started talking about Lee. Then Lee decided to talk about how he was all fixin for a big payday until he got to Philadelphia. He dropped that whole bomb about wanting to retire in Philly and would take less money to do it. DAMMMMNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!! Now how am I suppose to support the Phillies when Lee says romantic things like that.

The bottom line I wish Lee was still here. I wish Brett Myers was still here too. I’m also not completely sold on the Polanco signing, and Brian Schneider, really? But I have been upset with moves the Phils have made in the past and I was proved wrong everytime.

A note to our readers: I am back on twitter @TommymacWFC. I’m not able to twitter 24/7, but I will when I can. Get in touch with me, I love talking sports.

Chooch Gets Cha-Ching’ed

As we predicted on his birthday on Friday, Carlos Ruiz got his much-deserved contract extension last night, agreeing to a new contract possibly through 2013. Nearing $9 million in monies over the next 3 years, and including a $5 million club option for a fourth, Ruiz becomes the 25th Phillie to be guaranteed cash in the 2010 season. He is also the final arbitration-eligible player, after the team also locked up starter Joe Blanton and outfielder Shane Victorino to 3-year deals.

Mr. Tug over at The Fightins takes the cake easily for best headline, as well as best Photoshopping job relating to the signing.

Mucho helado for Chooch!

Unassisted Triple Play Ranks 7th on Phillies Nation

It’s that time of year again. No, pitchers and catchers are not report to spring training. That’s not for another 24 days. No, instead, it’s that time of year in which Phillies blogs start to wrap up their Top Plays posts and begin to hone in on #1. Which means that Beardo’s unassisted triple play starts to show up as well. Lucky for us, Bruntlett made that play in the same season as a World Series run, so it has absolutely no chance of being anyone’s top play, and probably not in any Top Five’s, either. Otherwise, the world would most likely shatter. It’d be like if Avatar, a movie with great special effects, but absolultely zero plot, won the award for Best Picture at the Golden Globes or Oscars. Er… wait, never mind. In any case, unless we were, like, the Nationals or Pirates or something, there is no way that a player this bad could get such major recognition for a play that lucky without the Earth suddenly stopping its rotation.

At Phillies Nation, the play finished 7th out of 25 for best moment of the year…

Happy Birthday, Chooch!

Congrats, Carlos Ruiz! You’re 31 today! Your present? A lifetime supply of ice cream! Oh, yeah, and the possibility of a contract extension. You only made $400,000 in 2009, so your asking of $2.5 mil is in no way unreasonable, considering how much you contribute to this team. Plus, Blanton and Victorino both got hefty raises.

When Eric Bruntlett’s Advice Goes Epicly Awesome

I was catching up on posts over at Phillies blog-leader The Fightins when I stumbled across this seemingly ordinary post (at least by The Fightins’ standards). A website, ThanksRoy.com was started, apparently by a Toronto fan, for people to give their thanks to Roy Halladay and the 12 years of service he gave to the Blue Jays organization. Meech liked how someone calling himself “Roy Halladay, Philadelphia” wrote back to his fans on the site dedicated to him:

I’d like to thank the fans, you guys, for all of your support.  Moving to Philadelphia is one of the hardest things I’ve had to do in my entire life, and I’ll never forget about you.  My wife actually told me about this site, and it’s very touching.  Now get a life and stop making these bullshit posts.  Cito Gaston is a terrible manager, Halladay out.”

So, I took a look around this site, as I had quite a few questions. Did anyuone else of any degree of notoriety leave their comments? Is there anything else that I can add? Well, the answer to both those questionss was, “No,” but I did find the next best thing. One “Beardo Bruntlett” from the “Washington Metro Area” made a note of utmost importance to our blog.

Natty Light

Eric Bruntlett has signed a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals? It’s true! The Nationals!!! It’s too good to be true. And silly me thought it was great when the Phillies simply didn’t bring him back. Ha!

Now you may be asking yourself why the hell I’m so excited that Beardo signed with a division rival. Well let’s examine this…
