Successful episode of the BBA podcast hosted by us last night. Why don’t ya have a listen, in case you missed it?
BBA Baseball Talk – Apr 28,2010
Yes, the Fire Eric Bruntlett-hosted podcast lasted all of 52 seconds last night, due to some technical difficulties of epic proportions. Of course, they were resolved rather quickly once we actually took time to rationally think about it.
So, we have rescheduled for tonight at 10:00 PM. No Phillies game to get in the way! You have no excuses now! That is, of course, unless you want to keep your sanity. We sincerely apologize to anyone listening live who had to sit through minutes of silence just to get to that.

“In baseball, an unassisted triple play occurs when a defensive player makes all three putouts by himself in one continuous play, without any teammates touching the ball (assist). In Major League Baseball, it is one of the rarest of individual feats, along with hitting four home runs in one game and hitting for a natural cycle. There have been more perfect games in baseball history than unassisted triple plays. During a span of over 65 seasons (June 1927 to September 1992), there was only one unassisted triple play in the major league.”
Now, what is an unassisted triple play when it comes to Jeopardy!’s purposes? An unassisted triple play is the greatest answer (question) you could ever give, because there’s a 99% that our boy Bruntlett is involved. Such was the case last week, when the category of “2009 MLB Recap” came up.

New feature here, to incorporate literally the coolest site on the Internets – Baseball Reference. They have a feature there called the “Play Index,” where you can find tons of info on things you didn’t think you cared about until you try it. For example, after Ubaldo Jimenez’s no-hitter last Saturday, I wondered who walked the most batters in a no-hitter, (10, Jim Maloney, CIN, 1965) who achieved the highest Game Score (101, Sandy Koufax, LAD, 1965) or who throw the most pitches (138, Sandy Koufax, LAD, 1962)
My personal favorite feature, however, is the ability to see how a specific batter has performed against every pitcher he has ever faced, from long-time starters to obscure middle relievers. It also works the other way, seeing how the pitcher has faced against all hitters. It also gives you in-depth information on each specific at-bat between pitcher and batter. F0r example, Chase Utley’s solo career home run off of Tim Lincecum – one of just two hits in 17 at bats – came on a 2-0 pitch in the bottom of the 4th, with the Phils down 2-0, and Utley being the first hitter of the inning, on a June 3rd, 2007 game at CBP. I find this particularly useful for previewing games, to view how the starting pitchers have fared against the hitters on the team they are facing.

Jimmy Rollins is out for at best 2-4 weeks with a calf strain. In previous years this would cause massive twitching and cause my to curse loudly for an extended period of time as it meant that Eric Bruntlett would be getting some playing time. This year however Bruntlett is serving time in the Nationals’ minor league system and the Phillies have signed Juan Castro to be their utility player.
Now we (perhaps unfairly) immediately dubbed him Mexibruntlett and El Beardo. I’m not at all familiar with the guy, although a .230 career average is less than encouraging. He’s supposed to be a defensive specialist, so seeing him boot a couple balls in the home opener was also less than encouraging.
However Juan Castro, you are not officially Mexibruntlett yet! He still has time to prove us wrong! So go out there and be the adequate bench player we all know you can be Juan! Can’t you tell our confidence in these exclamation points!
Get well soon J-Roll, your friends at Red Bull need you!
““One strike away. Nothing and two the count to Hinske. Fans on their feet, rally towels being waved. Brad Lidge stretches. The 0-2 pitch… Swing and a miss! Struck him out! The Philadelphia Phillies are 2008 World Champions of baseball! Brad Lidge does it again and stays perfect for the 2008 season! 48-for-48 in save opportunities and lets this city celebrate! Don’t let the 48-hour wait diminish the euphoria of this moment and celebration. And it has been 28 years since the Phillies have enjoyed a world championship, 25 years in this city that a team has enjoyed a world championship, and the fans are ready to celebrate. What a night!”

Well, the Internet’s being retarded and not ending the video where I told it to, but I think you get the idea. Baseball’s back, and my productivity’s in trouble. (Hey, now. Hey, now. Baseball’s back!)
So, this is it. This is what we’ve waited damn near 4 months for. Today, Roy Halladay pitches in red pinstripes in a game that means something, against a team that’s really bad. I’ll set the odds that he throws a perfect game at 3-1, and a no-hitter at even odds. A 9-inning shutout is -500.
